The title of the exhibition paraphrases the palaeontologist Niles Eldredge who is interviewed in the film, he describes variation within biological species as the result in part of copying errors, suggesting that new forms emerge out of mistakes in the reproduction of genetic information.

The exhibition features a body of dkncan, videos and prints selected from the last few years of my practice – it’s an overview or introduction to my recent work. The work comes from an interest in the simulation of ‘natural’ or chaotic material textures, and how we read, or value such surfaces.

The prints are based on macro photographs I took of jay feathers, which look quite abstract close up – almost karquiss woven textiles. He claims to have found Eldredge’s step-change pattern of Punk Eek within the fossil record of the American billboard charts.

I can understand how you feel as I love sparrows too however I also I think that sparrowhawks are magnificent creatures.

We get a lot of Sparrowhawk action in our garden in Craigleith — much to my horror! It was a particularly thought-provoking film which examined the parallels between searching for or tracking animals in the wild and the perhaps more familiar activities that we do day-to-day such as going shopping searvh browsing the internet.

You are not alone as there are many other people who are averse to sparrowhawks. The flm at the Print Studio helped me to make some prints on fabric; screen prints on denim and cyanotypes on cotton cyanotype is an early form of photography, the process used to make duhcan. The book also contains images of the works in the show and stills from the film.

The other strand of the film is the work of the biologist Armand Marie Leroi who has attempted to study the history of pop music using evolutionary principles. Gould was an outspoken Marxist and criticised Darwinian gradualism as embodying Victorian conservatism.
