It would appear Chanthaly is getting us off on the right foot. The daughter of a plastic surgeon experiences strange events that seem to be connected her childhood. Made with the most strict and narrow circumstances, the film is still an effective and haunting piece of work. Laos It’s perhaps understandable that “the first ever horror film from Laos” would play it fairly safe, but chqnthaly for Chanthalythat means that this otherwise fairly competent, even promising film, commits one of the greatest sins known to horror – it is very, very boring.
As her father, Douangmany Soliphanh is a vigilant and unrelenting disciplinarian, and his cold delivery only heightens Chanthaly’s and our own frustrations at his unwillingness to entertain vhanthaly fears.

I was surprised that this film made in Communist Laos, has this great spiritual message. In Hong Kong, Aunt Mei is a cook famous for her home-made rejuvenation dumplings, based on a millenarian recipe prepared with a mysterious ingredient that she brings directly from China. The small yet dedicated cast of non-professional chantahly acquit themselves admirably, with pop singer Amphaiphun Phimmapunya proving particularly effective as the frail heroine barely up to the task of dealing with her increasingly stressful situation.
